Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Serbia and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta were established in 2001, while the Embassy of the Order of Malta in Belgrade was opened in 2003.

The first donation to the Kingdom of Serbia took place in 1885, when the Order of Malta donated to Kingdom of Serbia an ambulance train of ten wagons in the aftermath of the war between the Kingdom of Serbia and the Principality of Bulgaria, which ran between Belgrade and Niš and transported the wounded regardless of the side they fought for.

The Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta in the Republic of Serbia, since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, has been continuously carrying out a humanitarian mission in the thousand-year tradition of the Order.

On 13 October 2006, the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Fra’ Andrew Bertie, received at the Magistral Palace the President of the Republic of Serbia, Boris Tadic, who was accompanied by the Serbian Ambassador to the Order, Darko Tanaskovich.

In December 2013, in the historical Palace of Serbia, seat of the Presidency of the Republic, was signed a Cooperation Agreement in the humanitarian field between the Order and Serbia.

In 2016, the Grand Hospitaller of the Sovereign Order of Malta Dominique de La Rochefoucauld-Montbel paid an official visit in Belgrade. He was received by Zlatibor Lončar, Minister of Health of the Republic of Serbia. During the talks, Minister Zlatibor Lončar expressed the Government’s gratitude for the humanitarian and social activities undertaken in Serbia by the Embassy, with particular reference to the successful project“Make a WISH to the Sovereign Order of Malta”.

In 2021, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selaković was received by Grand Chancellor Albrecht Boeselager at the Magistral Villa in Rome. During the meeting, the postal agreement establishing a regular service between Serbia and the Sovereign Order of Malta’s government seats was signed.
