Zemun, September 19
On Sunday, September 19, a solemn Holy Mass celebrated in the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zemun, marked the 300th anniversary of the arrival of Capuchin priests who restored this Catholic church after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire.
The Mass was conducted by the Bishop of Srem, Mons. Đuro Gašparević.
We of the Sovereign Order of Malta like to remember that as early as 1332, the Hospitallers of St. John (nowadays the Order of Malta) were actively operating in this area. With the arrival of the Turks, the church was demolished and a mosque was built on that place.
The Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Belgrade Mons. Simon-Peter Lukyamuzi presented personal congratulations of the Holy Father Pope Francis to the parish priest Mons. Jozo Duspara, who expressed to us his “WISH” to help the restoration of the church, especially in terms of humidity protection.
