Bela Palanka (Serbia)
In Serbia the project of our Embassy “Make a WISH to the Order of Malta” is becoming more popular and respected. Some teachers and students from the primary school “Ljupče Španac” in Bela Palanka, already informed about our Make a WISH project, sent us a formal request.
In this school, they are carrying out a project called “Donate a book to the school library and help schoolchildren read more” with the goal to broaden their – at the moment rather modest – library collections.
The primary school “Ljupče Španac” is located in the south-east of Serbia, in one of the poorest municipalities in the country and, even if they have good support from the local government, they are still not able to meet all the needs and interests of their pupils. Out of 650 schoolchildren attending the school, 250 of them belong to families in need of social assistance. The school library, and the school itself, are the only place where children can find the books they need for proper education. But it‘s not enough!
On the Day of the Poor, we are pleased to be able to improve the educational standards of these children, so we have welcomed the WISH and we are now arranging with the school about the books to be sent very soon.
